Shows Page Updated; What's The Move This Weekend? | House Show Photos Out Now
Following the release of their newest EP: Born Into This World, JOUST, alongside artist Mauro de la Tierra and others, painted a mural on the walls outside of Paper Tiger downtown. The mural was started Mar. 19. and finished the following day.
At first, the band had a couple obstacles to work through before they could get things off the ground. Their close friends, band and label Out With The Goons lent them a helping hand.
“When we were looking for an artist, we were honestly shot with people that could for sure get the vision in the style we wanted it. Goons recommended Mauro to us and after looking at a couple of his old pieces we knew he was the one,” Alec from JOUST said.
“We loved the idea of keeping it all San Antonio for this release, and he specifically understands the culture of DIY hardcore punk rock, as well as art.”
The band is very familiar with the venue, as they have been attending as well as playing shows there for a while. Having a piece of their work and heart plastered on the walls of a venue they’ve grown to love feels like a dream to them.
“It feels surreal. This is a place we’ve all been coming to for years to see live music, and the impression these shows have left on us is something we’ll carry for the rest of our lives. I remember the first hardcore show I went to there specifically, and to have this full circle moment where something we did is represented physically on a wall outside of this place where us and our friends play is insane,” Alec said.
“Knowing that these things could leave the same impression on someone finding this scene means the absolute world.”
The mural isn’t just a huge accomplishment for the band either. Artist Mauro de la Tierra describes how the mural has helped him connect with his artists roots and how much of an engaging project it has been.
“Collaborating with a grassroots DIY group like Out With The Goons for the JOUST album was an enticing experience. I am deeply committed to community projects and thoroughly working alongside fellow creatives,” Tierra said.
“I feel honored to help make the vision come to fruition.”
Murals are a huge part of San Antonio culture. They can be spotted all over town in all sorts of different areas, and can be dedicated to anything. Most of the time they are made by the community, for the community.
“Murals hold significant importance, as they are accessible to a wide audience. I believe there is so much inspiration for groups to uncover innovative marketing strategies that incorporate community-driven projects like these. I look forward to seeing how this inspires the next generation of creative individuals,” Tierra said.
